Recap: The Mayer Hawthorne Revue

Written by Patricia Manlucu for Urban Outfitters Space15Twenty (2016)

One man, two nights, three groups, and five different outfits.

Andrew Cohen, the man behind the infamous Mayer Hawthorne, stole the LA nights away with his back-to-back, sold out shows at The Teragram Ballroom. For the first time ever, Mayer Hawthorne performed with all three of his groups in one night! This non-stop, three-hour concert featured performances from Jaded Incorporated, Tuxedo, and of course, Mayer Hawthorne himself. He’s probably the only artist that has performed as his own opening, secondary, and headlining acts!

With only about five or ten minute breaks between each performance, the concert flew by in the span of three hours. Each performance involved a quick outfit change, but what’s Mayer Hawthorne without his collection of custom tuxedos? He even performed his new song, “Cosmic Love,” which he explained will be part of his new album releasing this spring.

He practically stole everyone’s hearts by the end of the night too. He gave away a couple roses to some lucky girls before his performance of “Get to Know You,” but he ensured the crowd that all the ladies would go home with a rose. He kept his word, and as guests walked out, members of his team handed out roses, all of which included a little message and a number to call. You can call the number (805)83MAYER to hear a cute message from Mayer!

The crowd grooved the night away at the Teragram Ballroom. The venue was cozy but spacious, with standing room for about 650 guests. There’s even a café attached to the venue, fully equipped with coffee and snacks. This hidden gem of a venue is located down 7th street, strategically placed a couple blocks away from all the mayhem and traffic that Downtown LA has to offer. Nicki Minaj recently performed a surprise show for Red Bull’s Sound Select, and with The Mayer Hawthorne Revue, it only seems like the Teragram Ballroom is only going to get bigger from here, which means better artists and more shows!

We’ll never get tired of seeing Mayer Hawthorne live. He always knows how to keep the crowd moving. As expected, he ended the night by bringing all the artists on stage, pouring a few cups, and performing “Henny & Gingerale.” Keep an eye out for his new album in Spring, and make sure to see him in concert if you like what you hear – you won’t regret it!
